ObituaryTower Weekly News. Vol X, No. 1, Page 1 – June 4, 1909 THREE MEN KILLED AT SOUDAN MINE Two Crushed to Death in Fifteenth Level of No. 8 Shaft – Another Lives Several Hours and Then Succumbs HUGH FALL OF DIRT CAUSE OF TROUBLE Accident Occurred Last Monday Afternoon – Those in Charge Thought Place Where Men Were Working to Be Perfectly Safe In a cave-in, or fall of dirt, the fifteenth level of No. 8 shaft at the Soudan mine last Monday afternoon two miners were instantly killed and a third received injuries from which he died later. Qne other, Martin Kuretich, was hurt so badly that he may not recover, his skull being fractured and his leg broken in two places. The dead are Kaappo Nukala, aged 24, Charles Marm, aged 23, and John Russ, aged 25. The first two were single but Russ was married only a few weeks ago. Kuretich is married and has a large family of small children. The accident occurred after the miners had set off a blast and while they were engaged in baring down the loose dirt and rock. Seyeral tons of rock, which had been loosened by the blast, fell without a seconds warning. Nukala and Marm were caught by the full force of the cave-in and it was several hours before their crushed and mangled bodies could be recovered. The two injured men, Russ and Kuretich were removed at once to the Soudan Hospital where everything possible was done to alleviate their sufferings. One of Russ’ legs was crushed so badly that it had to be amputated, the doctors at that time believing they would be able to save his life. The shock was too great, however, and he died Wednesday afternoon. Those in charge at the mine are greatly grieved over the accident, they having been of the opinion that the place where the men were at work was perfectly safe.
