ObituaryTower weekly news. Vol XVIII, No. 10, Page 1 – July 27, 1917 Young Man Killed At Soudan Hans Larson was killed accidentally at the Soudan mine Monday afternoon. A crew of men of which Hans was one had raised a gin-pole to be used in removing the great trip-hammer from the ruins of the recent fire and when the weight of perhaps four tons was thrown onto a guy rope the cable parted and the pole fell, striking the unfortunate man with the above result. This family seems unduly unfortunate in that two years ago on August 15th, the father, John Alfred Larson, was drowned in Lake Vermilion while fishing a short distance out from the air compressor. There were three men in the boat at the time and Matt Lappi also drowned with Mr. Larson, John Hill escaping. Hans Larson was born in Soudan on October 22, 1900. He was the sole support of his mother, who is distracted over the loss of her son. Funeral services were held Thursday in Soudan from the Finnish Lutheran church with Rev. Koivimacki in charge. Interment was made in Lakeview cemetery. This trip-hammer which was being moved to its new site in the old dry house building has witnessed the death of four men. Some twenty years or so ago it hit a piece of pipe with a stick of dynamite inside of it and the shop was spattered with the blood of the men who were surrounding it at the time and three were killed while several were badly injured. On Monday it saw its last victim go down. |
