City Council approves Mud Creek property sale
MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 2018 — The Tower City Council was unanimous in its decision to sell a 40 acre parcel of land it owns adjacent to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness at its regular Monday, January 22 meeting. The property was listed with Janisch Realty, Inc. at $37,500, however the real estate company presented the city council with an offer of $30,000 from Luke Andrew Edwards. The city does not have and does not offer access to the 40 acre parcel in the sale and because the property has long been listed for sale the city council decided to sell the land at the reduced price. The vote to sell came following Alderman Lance Dougherty’s confirmation that the proceeds would be used to reduce the city’s debt to the Gundersen Trust. St. Louis County has the 40 acre parcel, 665-0010-04990, currently valued at only $17,300.
The city council also gave its unanimous approval to the transfer of a City of Tower cabin lease at 5749 Hoodoo Point Road, on Lake Vermilion. Gary Richard Wargin has made an offer to purchase the cabin and will continue the lease with the city when he takes possession on January 30.
City engineers determined that 11 sewer laterals will need to be replaced at Hoodoo Point Campground and the city council unanimously accepted a quote of $2,500 from Charlie Winger Construction to complete all the repairs. The city council previously received a quote of $1,700, for each of the 11 repairs, from Utility Systems of America.
City-Clerk Treasurer Linda Keith developed committee mission statements and job descriptions for 22 of the city’s standing committees and boards. The city council discussed the proposed mission statements but decided it would continue to review them and then adopt them when it again meets on February 12.
